Redefining Freight Movement in North Texas: The Alliance Logistics District

North Texas is taking logistics to the next level. Hillwood, in partnership with BNSF Railway and the City of Fort Worth, has launched the Alliance Logistics District, a cutting-edge mobility-focused hub within the AllianceTexas Smart Port.

Anchored by BNSF’s Alliance Intermodal Facility—the largest inland rail port in North America—the nearly 1,400-acre District is the first of its kind in BNSF’s rail and intermodal network. It’s set to transform how freight moves through North Texas.

Nicholas Konen, vice president of strategic development at Hillwood, noted of the new district, “By integrating advanced technology, modern infrastructure and regulatory flexibility, this initiative reinforces AllianceTexas’ standing as one of the most connected, forward-thinking logistics ecosystems in the country. These advancements reduce costs for customers, improve logistics efficiency and take pressure off public roadways.”

Key Advances for Companies Operating within the District:

  • Autonomous Vehicles: Semi- and fully autonomous trucks operating along District roadways.
  • Flexible Freight Movement: Private hostler vehicles can transport goods without a CDL between BNSF’s intermodal facility and nearby warehouses.
  • Heavy-Haul Efficiency: Freight over 80,000 pounds can move across District roads without special permits, making it easier to handle high-density or oversized goods.

Being collocated with one of BNSF’s largest intermodal facilities enables operators to save millions annually on operational costs while streamlining logistics across the region.

Connecting Everything: A $20 Million Private Bridge

Hillwood is also investing $20 million in a private heavy-haul bridge over FM-156. This bridge will directly connect 15 million square feet of distribution, logistics, and manufacturing space to the BNSF Alliance Intermodal Facility. Built to meet TxDOT standards and engineered for 120,000-pound axle loads, the three-lane bridge will keep heavy trucks off public roads, improving efficiency and safety. Construction is expected to wrap up by late 2026.
