An Alliance of Partnerships: State Highway 170

Since its inception, State Highway 170 has been a cornerstone of AllianceTexas’ transportation infrastructure. Originally constructed in 1992, the highway has undergone a significant transformation, culminating in a March 2024 opening that included four main lanes stretching from I-35W to State Highway 114. This expansion not only meets the demands of today but also anticipates the needs of the future, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods and people throughout the region.

BEFORE

SH-170 connects some of North Texas' most vital economic assets, including DFW International Airport to the east, back over to Alliance, which is home to BNSF Railway’s Alliance Intermodal Facility and Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport. This highway now seamlessly ties these transportation hubs together, enhancing connectivity for freight and commuter traffic alike.

TODAY

“The recently completed SH-170 expansion we can enjoy today is a true win-win for our customers, the AllianceTexas workforce, and our community,” said Russell Laughlin, Hillwood’s executive vice president of strategic development and innovation. “In our continuing partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation and Regional Transportation Council, the new lanes address today’s needs while anticipating future growth and innovative mobility technology. Using the existing frontage lanes during construction minimized costs and disruptions for the main lanes, a testament to our commitment to thoughtful infrastructure planning.”

Decades in the Making

The story of SH-170 is a testament to vision, collaboration and persistence. From the earliest land donations in 1986 to its recognition as Texas' fastest highway completion in 1992, every milestone has been the result of successful public-private partnerships.

  • 1986: Perot, Nelson Bunker Hunt, and McGuire-Thomas donate land for SH-170.
  • 1992: SH-170 opens, serving as a vital two-lane frontage road corridor with space reserved for future growth.
  • 2020: TxDOT begins main lane construction to address rising population and traffic.
  • 2024: The newly expanded highway opens to the public, featuring four main lanes that streamline movement across the corridor.
